How to Choose the Right Mouthwash

You don’t need to hold a professional degree in dentistry to know the importance of oral health. Brushing, rinsing, and flossing should be part of your daily routine - for adults and kids alike. Often time we forget how important mouthwashes are and usually skip them. Not anymore.

It is necessary to know the kind of mouthwash that is needed for your oral health. Everybody has different needs and identifying them is crucial.

Gum Health

If you are a germophobe and cringe at the idea of bacteria partying in your mouth then you need an antiseptic mouthwash. While you are in the mouthwash section at the supermarket pondering over what to get, also look for options with antibacterial or antimicrobial ingredients.

These mouthwashes target the gum line and attack the bacteria around it. Also, continuous use of antiseptic mouthwashes decreases your chances of developing gingivitis.

Fluoride

A quick search on Google will reveal how fluoride is essential for your teeth. It prevents tooth decay and if you intend on keeping your teeth for your full life, then make sure the next time you purchase a mouth it has fluoride in it. In Ottawa, drinking water is fortified with added fluoride, but getting an extra dose from your toothpaste and mouthwash is also recommended.

Bad Breath

The good thing about bacteria is that it is not visible to the naked eye and can be easily ignored. The same cannot be said about bad breath. Bad breath can have quite the adverse effect on your social life and it can easily be eliminated. Some mouthwashes are specifically designed to combat bad breath. And seriously, it is just one rinse away to get rid of foul breath.

Although, if the bad breath is an everyday problem and mouthwash is used religiously then it is recommended to contact a dentist as there could be a bigger problem.

Canadian Dental Association Recognition

It is always recommended to purchase a mouthwash with a CDA Seal of Recognition. It is tested and the results will be as promised. Also, you will get your money’s worth.

Considerations

If you do not know what type of mouthwash if suitable for you, then contact your dentist and ask him/ her to advise you. It goes without saying but such products should be kept out of the reach of children since they contain alcohol (though non-alcohol mouthwashes are also available). Children below six years of age should not use mouthwashes and if there is a stinging sensation in the mouth then stop using it and seek medical attention right away.

If you do not use a mouthwash, then you should have been convinced by now how useful it is. If not, five more minutes on Google will convince you. Use a mouthwash in your daily oral health cycle and you shall enjoy a bacteria-free smile.
