Dr. John Connelly

Dr. Connelly received his dental degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1984. While studying dentistry, Dr. Connelly acted as a the Student-faculty Liaison Officer and was a member of the Admissions Committee. He was also awarded the American Dental Society Anesthesiology Award. Upon graduation, Dr. Connelly was offered one of only two intern positions at University Hospital in London, Ontario.

Throughout his dental career, Dr. Connelly has continued to further his education, knowledge and understanding of dental diseases. he has sat as a board member on two research companies: Knowell Therapeutics and Oral Life. These companies investigated and promoted the University of Toronto research that sought to prevent tooth decay by modifying the streptococcus mutans bacteria. In a research role, Dr. Connelly was the principle investigator for the Ottawa clinical trial and the results of the study were published in August, 1994 Journal of Oral Health.

Dr. Connelly joined Carlingwood Dental Centre in 1984. The centre provided a patient-centered approach to delivering dental care. The centre offered beneficial services to patients, which were not commonly available at the time. These included a convenient, wheel-char accessible location, extended hours and a mandatory continuing education requirement. Patients benefited from the group practice that facilitated collaboration in treatment planning, case presentations and mentoring.

Throughout the years Dr. Connelly and his partners have continued to maintain a dental centre, which remains patient centered and at the forefront of dental technology and care. Carlingwood Dental Centre is a fully computerized digital office that makes extensive use of imaging and scanning technologies. Computer programs such as Nobel Guide/Nobel Clinician combined with CT scans allow the dentists at Carlingwood Dental Centre to place implants with maximum safety and minimal surgery. This technique is beneficial for patients who are converting from complete dentures to dental implants. Dr. Connelly's Clinical Case Report of Guided Surgery was published in 2012 in the Journal of the Ontario Dental Association. In addition, Nobel Biocare recognized Carlingwood Dental Centre's dedication of achievement to implant dentistry with a gold award in 2011.

Throughout his educational career, Dr. Connelly has always combined his academic studies with sports. At St. Michael's College School in Toronto he played both hockey and football and was a member of the Toronto City All Star Team. While at university, Dr. Connelly played on Western's championship OUAA rugby team and coached Western's intercollegiate cross-country ski team for four years.

Prior to entering the Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Connelly had a career in education and he pursued his interest in outdoor education while studying at Simon Fraser University. During the last decade Dr. Connelly has been a tireless advocate for public safety. He has presented to the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, the Chief Coroner for Ontario and a Judicial Review Bard. Much still needs to be accomplished in order to ensure public safety.

Dr. Connelly volunteers at the Ottawa Mission on a monthly basis where he provides dental services to the residents.

In his spare time Dr. Connelly continues to enjoy playing sports, reading and spending time with his family.
