Has your dentist recommended dentures? Not sure what to expect? Here’s everything you need to know about dentures to help answer some of those burning questions you have.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are used to replace a missing tooth or even multiple missing teeth. These artificial teeth and gums can be used with remaining teeth, implants or none at all. They can also be permanent or temporary, depending on each patient’s condition.
Partial Dentures Versus Full Dentures
There are two main types of dentures: partial and full. Partial dentures, which are also commonly known as bridges, are used on patients who still have some remaining healthy teeth. Any gaps are filled by the dentures, which are supported by the existing teeth. These can be permanent or temporary and can also be adjusted to fill in more spaces if other teeth are removed in the future.
Full dentures are used when all of the teeth are removed. These sit right on top of the gums, either on the upper arch, lower arch or both. These are usually held in place by suction and with the help of an oral adhesive. They can also be removed. Another variation is overdentures which can be supported by dental implants. Once the oral surgeon inserts the implant, the denture is then custom made to fit your mouth and snap into place easily.
How Are They Made?
Previously, dentures were made from plastic or porcelain. Today, they’re usually made using hard resin. Both artificial teeth and gums are made to look natural with a customized fit for each individual patient. This material can be more delicate so it’s important to take good care of them to prevent chipping or cracks.
Why Are They Necessary?
If you’re missing teeth, this can impact the entire shape and health of your face and jaw structure since they’re not getting supported adequately. Dentures provide the support that your mouth needs to maintain a strong and healthy structure for the face, cheeks, and lips. Of course, eating food is also easier with dentures and it will give you a beautiful smile to show off.
How to Care for Dentures?
As mentioned, dentures are fragile and can sustain damage easily if you’re not careful. Take good care of them by cleaning them daily, as you would with natural teeth. Bacteria will still exist even with artificial teeth. To clean them properly, remove them and rinse them underwater. Then using a soft denture brush and denture cleaner, give it a thorough cleaning. Do not use regular toothbrushes or toothpaste as these can cause damage. Finally, rinse them again. Don’t forget to give your gums or any existing teeth cleaning too. Before getting into bed, remove them and store them in a cup with warm water and denture solution to prevent them from drying out or tarnishing.
