Preparing Your Child for Their First Dentist Appointment

If you’re thinking about your child’s first dentist appointment, we know it can sometimes feel a little daunting. It can be a stressful process for both parents and children. To help ease your worries and any tears during that initial visit, here are some tips to consider when preparing your child for their first dental appointment.

Book It Early

If you’re unsure when to consider booking that first appointment, we recommend doing so once their first tooth emerges or by their first birthday, at the latest. The reason dentists recommend to do this early is to start establishing a good foundation for their oral health. This initial appointment is also beneficial for parents to learn the proper techniques for brushing their child’s teeth and gums, how to identify potential problems, and how to help them maintain a healthy mouth as they continue to grow.

Start Checking Their Teeth At Home

To get your infant used to the idea of someone looking and poking around in their mouth, it’s helpful to first start this as a habit at home. Every so often, take a moment to look in their mouth to examine it. It’s helpful to have them lay down while doing this to get a good look. Even if they don’t have any teeth emerging yet, it’s good to practice before they go to the dentist so it’s not too scary for them. If there are no teeth as of yet, you’ll still need to gently wipe their gums using a clean, wet cloth once they’re finished eating.

Play Dentist To Get Them Comfortable

In addition to examining their mouth, another helpful way to get infants comfortable with the dentist prior to going is to role play it out with them. You can use a doll for this, or even opt for a kid-friendly dental book to help explain more about their dental appointments with colourful, happy, and positive pictures. This helps to reduce their anxiety (and yours) once they come in.

Be Strategic With Your Appointment

If you know that your child has a tendency to be cranky during a certain time each day, it’s best to avoid booking an appointment during that time. Being strategic about when you book can make all the difference in how that first experience goes and how they associate certain emotions with a trip to the dentist.
